Freedom & Family: First Days Of The Fillmore – Part 3
I think we are living in a time of profound importance in history. Even before I’d set a single foot or digit upon the golden shores I was sure of it. Convinced that one day that same scholarly illumination we so feverishly focus on the art, music and tinderbox-times of the late 60’s will find its way back here. Tracing our steps to and through the struggles and strange calendar of these days. Good and evil are almost blatantly defined now and dancing defiantly in plain view. I’ve read so often the line, “When you are in the scene you don’t see the scene”. That must have been what San Francisco in that time felt like. The people making the real progress toward change far too busy to worry about what was cool. They were out fighting in the courts and in the streets. They were creating art and making records that did change lives and had a reach much farther than any localized movement could at the time. And in that way I whole heartedly believe that we are all active participants in this Roan County revolution. Borrowing from spirits that never fully rested in spilt level Laurel Canyon houses or Northern California crystal hippie communes. Creative, portals tucked just far enough away and shielded from “Last Picture Show” America, they continue providing friendly, earthly-harbor to those ghosts still possessing the most visionary and virtuous ethos of their time. California’s eternal requisite residents.
It was with this in and on our minds that we opened our eyes and struggled against the Bay Area’s brightest and most accurate beams of morning light. Instructing irritated eyes to decipher the time and formulate a plan for the day. Or at least the next 45 minutes which would get me safely out of the room and through the lobby where I could find something to eat and where later, all our friends and freaks would eventually gather. That was the start. With currently just over a weeks distance between us and these events, most of the day is still but a blissed out blur. A joyful expression now covered in the shadows of one of the best live performances I’ve ever personally witnessed by this band. Night 2 would take us to an edge only special music can access. Beyond it’s all-star setlist which tells only a mere fraction of the story, the 3rd & 4th sets of the run would twist my mind and rearrange even my perception of what this band is capable of. In what seemed like constant pre-show connection and conversation, I had hardly noticed the floor filling up so fast. I quickly turned and made my way back to the rail. Dodging the tuning blasts that now were radiating out from the stage. Sounding the alarm that the ship was now leaving the bay and everyone still on board was in for the duration of the trip. Jeff’s, Sweet Thang & Cisco baseline instantly separating our soles from the floorboards. One that wouldn’t return to earth for the better part of the next three hours!
