About the Artist: Never judge a book by it’s cover. 30 years ago I crossed paths with the one person you never want to associate with in school. Seeing that mohawk hairstyle, dressed in black and skulls with the shirts of punk bands that scared me. With a skateboard always nearby and a leatherbound book under his arm that I was sure carried a list of his enemies.. or maybe his kills, and a wicked smile and maniacal laugh; I ran the other way. Shawn Esposito was the biggest Freak I knew of in any of the surrounding towns. And we shared the same school. Preconceived notions thrown my way when we first became friends – that ever changing hair, was nothing more than hair; the clothes were just clothes and did not define him; the bands on his shirts ended up filling the soundtrack of my youth as one by one he introduced me to bands and scenes. The book of victims that never left his side, was only a book of his art. The day he opened it to share what was inside, was the day I knew Shawn was beyond this plane of reality with his skills. 30 years later, he is still the one I compare others to as the gold standard. When coming up with an artist to represent the CRB and the Raven’s Reels Almanac, the name that came to me first was Shawn Esposito. From little Holmdel, New Jersey… to the world stage based in Los Angeles, California, Shawn has worked with the biggest names in the industry. Creating art for TV & Movies, driving video production and working with the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson and Billy Joel to name just a prestigious few! He’s done work for organizations like MusiCares and the Grammys and when I reached out to him over social media, I wasn’t even sure I’d hear back. But Shawn reminded me again never to judge a book by it’s cover. Because that manical laugh and wicked smile I once shy’d from, I’d now come to know as one of the most genuine smiles and humor filled laughs anyone could ever hope to find in a friend. 30 years later the mohawk may be gone, but the psychedelic inspired artwork he creates still drops my jaw to the floor. Superheavy Studios is Shawn’s home now, turning out some of the most incredible artwork you will see anywhere. Freaks of the world unite… this is not the last time you will be seeing art from Shawn and the Raven’s Reels Almanac.
