Ok folks…here comes the old cliche about setting the bar high. What went down in Tuscaloosa last night to kick off our “Freak Across The South” was quite simply one of the best shows of any kind I’ve seen. For almost 3 hours we were caught inside the vapors of a rocket ship lifting off and the entire congregation was loving every second. We are headed south for Thursday nights show in Mobile at the Soul Kitchen, but I wanted to hit on a few highlights as this one still has my ears, head, and soul buzzing.
The opening was a powerful New Cannonball that I swear lifted us all up and set us down a few feet back. They barely slowed down before charging into Tomorrow Blues with that exact same force and energy and you could just tell something what’s happening, this was one of “those nights”. For me the first set highlight came in the first time segue of Tulsa > Tumbleweed. They let’ Tulsa dissolve just before the takeoff jam into a dreamy, atonal drone of sorts before breezing into an absolutely stunning Tumbleweed. The jam missing from Tulsa appeared here in spades as the ending kept reaching higher and higher until Tony kicked into Never Been To Spain. The boogie bomb now safely delivered, the house went nuts and the energy never dipped throughout the rest of the set.
The second set highlights are far too many to get into briefly, but just know that Behold The Seer is on an entire other level only three versions in. I can’t even image what sort of freaky, wonderful legs this thing is going to grow and I can’t wait to listen along every step of the way. Without a doubt the peak among many was the Tough Mama Jam. Once they locked in the lights dimmed red and we were all carried away into some of the deepest, spookiest and most amazing spaces music is capable of taking you. The band seemed to grab us all by the back of the neck and gently pull our frame from our skin, guiding us off into the farthest corners of the musical galaxy. It got weird, it got scary, but it was also amazing. Sign me up for the next trip!
