“I do my dreaming roaming the roads, of jewels that shine in the sun.” How many of us have lived that very line from “Glow”? That feeling of adventure and wonder that comes from rolling your bones across the country while giving chase to that magic from the stage. Those special places and moments that only the music can unlock and although they may be fleeting in duration, they are eternally etched on our souls and these recordings. Through stories and notes like these we mark our journey and our march through this universe together. Reaching with collective limbs of love that when fueled by the groove and swing of the CRB, can raise the vibrational perception of an entire town or region of the country on any given night. A sound that brings us all together from places far and near to smile and laugh and dance inside the cosmic quintets quintessential California commune of sound and vibration. A place where no matter how you dance or in which part of this welcoming dance floor those movements take you, a smiling face is always there to dance away the night, or maybe just that song or jam! And even though the Brotherhood Arts Lab is headquartered on a hill along the golden coast of California, this community and network of bare feet and heads continues to cast a welcoming net of love and friendship across this entire land. Making it easy for us to move within this esoteric CRB universe we all love, one where through kindness and compassion we can continue to expand and grow, reaching further and flying higher than any of us ever could alone! With that in mind let’s pick up the tour in Nashville where we left off last Sunday and PLEASE comment and share your stories from this past week! Together we can combine to write our own timeless Almanac scrolls for future generations of CRBeings far and near!
October’s first breeze carried the band to Nashville on 10/1 where news started circulating early that the evenings tent show of beautiful oddities and vibe was slated for three sets. And even better for our fellow freaks at home, streamed live (first 2 sets) via Nashville’s Lightning 100 FM! Inhibitions fell like the seasons leaves on the dance floor from the first notes of the fire breathing opening act, Seven Nights To Rock! The shorter sets were no less focused and powerful and this opening jaunt held three classics in Reflections, Tulsa and Rosalee. With the bands own cosmic acid twang offering High Is Not The Top representing the new album and the Brotherhoods very own style of California country rock. A little Waylon mixed in as a nod to the towns real outlaw troubadours of the past and everyone was smiles as they took a quick break before the soon to come 2nd. The dancing shoes shown showers of sparks as they opened back up with the CRB equivalent of a rock and roll speedball! Good To Know, Venus and Seer!!!!???? Each of those songs are highly combustible on their own! But back to back to back they create a frenzy of fun, orange sunshine boogie that’s unique to our little universe, but reaches so much further. The couch tour version ended with the Parliament pump of Narcissus and the “legalize it” undertones of Leave My Guitar Alone. The 3rd at Third, and final set of the night, was for the congregated of the freak nation only and the band led them through something they proudly call their own. Clear Blue Sky finds it way into the leadoff slot in the order and twists itself into Sunday Sound for an exploratory excursion with the Wizard steering the trip. California Hymn sneaks seamlessly into the fray and at this point the band had everyone involved on a deep, tangible level. The west coast wander ends at the beach with Shore Power before a classic cover riddled closing run where the Music was Hot, Loose and Boppin’, sending everyone out onto the banks of that mighty river still in perpetual motion.
The guys had a nice well deserved day off before rolling into the greens of Augusta on 10/3. Sky City is another one of those venues that has always produced great shows and the anticipated gravitational emancipation had us all in states of various bliss. 1st set highlights were plenty and included the ever-tightening Venus In Chrome and Neal finding the illuminated ether somewhere deep inside About A Stranger. Sail On Sailor navigating its way back to the setlist has been such a wonderful thing to see and hear! This Brian Wilson classic and the dreamy vibe that permeates the CRB’s version always gets things flowing astrologically. CR connects with every emotion both vocally and with his guitar work on Heart To Break and what a fan I am of the little spacey jam this song is harvesting. A rhythm section heavy closing high speed comet takes the shape of Good To Know, Narcissus and Shore Power and the band was off into the night. The circus leaving town while the baptized locals shuffle home with dazed smiles of glee.
The October revival continued in Norfolk, CT, inside the beautiful barn like bastion of Infinity Hall. After having the previous day off, the band didn’t miss a beat and was off on a rocket early and often. By the time Neal pulled back his slide, Roll Old Jeremiah was starting to buckle beneath the heat and glow. The strings wound wicked did their deeds during a dimension bending Star Or Stone that rained cut diamonds across the crowd. Tulsa>Tumbleweed was every bit the tundra trip it appears and our space and timekeeping superstar Tony Leone sealed our fate with a second line worthy version of Hog For You! Jeff drops serious smooth low end helping everyone into the pocket that has become Good To Know and the 2nd set is underway. Blonde Light was an especially nice treat live to keep all the vibes and momentum moving forward. We were riding high when a rowdy New Cannonball received roars from the crowd and Rosalee came to see what all the noise was about! The roof of course came off but was quickly repaired with the beautiful Till Your Well Runs Dry encore as a wave goodbye on their way west for a few groovy nights in PA!
Multiple night stays for a traveling troop such as this are rare occurrences by nature. So it’s no surprise that the band uses these tiny ripples in the fabric of time to tune in a little more clearly with those unseen things. The weekend exploded with the boogie-woogie jail house jump of Sweet Thang & Cisco, the lysergic tint of High Is Not The Top and the twisted Tornado bundle of harmony, guitars and rhythm. But of course it’s the Meanwhile>Cali Hymn from which the set pulls it’s energy that draws our eye. The beautiful sunny day trip abruptly broken by the jagged and ominous undertones of Forever As The Moon. But alas, all is well in the cosmos by the end as a peaceful Clear Blue Sky>Sunday Sound sets us softly back into the California traffic and state of mind. Tony stomps the 2nd to life and they absolutely roar through Leave My Guitar Alone and continue building on it further with an insanity filled black-light seamless sock hop through Lizzie Mae>Can You Hear Me! Burn Slow is another favorite of mine that I’m so happy to see coming back around more often and this was an extra dreamy one. That’s followed by Adam honking us through a magical Shore Power to cap night 1. For the encore they reach back for more ethereal harmony and class. Giving us a faithful take of Dream Baby. The last night on this midway of madness was a bit of a twist. Opening the night with a set full of exploratory vehicles such as Reflections, Tulsa, Star Or Stone and the most recent lava lamp rave up Blue Star Woman! The 2nd set and last of the run was a masterclass in rock and roll. There are not very many bands on the road today that can take a stage and focus everything that we love about them into a flawless yet loose set of music like this one. Venus provides the spark and the wheels were set in motion. Like acid soaked astronomers mapping the star charts across the CRB universe. Hark The Herald! She Share’s My Blanket! Seer! Good To Know! New musical constellations for us to follow mixed with the tested and timeless such as Narcissus and the sweetest of all Rosalee. Gospel calls loud and runs deep through this band and Bye And Bye just sounds so so good through their lens. What a way to end this two night Haight heavy honky-tonk intergalactic gathering!
